Cataracts
Cataracts are a condition where the lens of the eye becomes cloudy, making it difficult to see clearly. The lens of the eye is normally clear, and it works by focusing light onto the retina at the back of the eye. However, as we age, the proteins in the lens can clump together, causing cloudiness and reducing the clarity of vision. Cataracts are a common condition that can affect anyone but are more common in older adults.
Symptoms of Cataracts
The symptoms of cataracts can vary from person to person, but some common symptoms include:
- Blurred or hazy vision
- Difficulty seeing at night or in low light conditions
- Sensitivity to light and glare
- Fading or yellowing of colors
- Double vision or multiple images in one eye
Causes of Cataracts
Cataracts are most commonly caused by the natural aging process, but they can also be caused by other factors, such as:
- Prolonged exposure to UV radiation from the sun or other sources
- Smoking
- Certain medical conditions, such as diabetes
- Trauma to the eye
- Certain medications, such as corticosteroids
Treatment for Cataracts
The treatment for cataracts depends on the severity of the condition and how much it is impacting your quality of life. In mild cases, prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses may be enough to improve your vision. However, eventually you’ll likely need lens replacement surgery. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing! During the surgery, the cloudy lens is removed and replaced with an artificial lens, which can restore clarity and improve vision. With the newest advancement in intraocular lenses (IOLs), we can remove your cataracts and free you from glasses or contacts at the same time. The procedure is usually performed on an outpatient basis and takes only about 15 minutes to complete. Learn more about our options for cataract surgery here.
