LASIK and other Refractive Surgeries
LASIK, or laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis, is a type of refractive surgery that uses a laser to reshape the cornea of the eye. This can correct common vision problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.
Who is a Candidate for LASIK?
LASIK is a safe and effective procedure for many people with common vision problems. However, it’s important to have a comprehensive eye exam with an experienced eye surgeon to determine if LASIK is right for you. Some factors that may disqualify you from LASIK include:
- Thin corneas
- Severe dry eye
- Certain medical conditions, such as diabetes
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Age under 18
What Happens During LASIK Surgery?
LASIK surgery is a quick and painless procedure that typically takes only 10 to 15 minutes per eye. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, and the eye is numbed to minimize any discomfort. During the procedure, a small flap is created on the surface of the cornea using a microkeratome or femtosecond laser. At Petelin Vision, we perform “bladeless” LASIK, using the femtosecond laser for the critical flap step, making it safer and more comfortable for the patient. The LASIK laser is then used to reshape the underlying corneal tissue to correct the vision problem. The flap is then replaced, and the eye begins to heal.
Most people experience little to no pain during LASIK surgery, and recovery is typically quick and easy. If a patient is nervous about the surgery, we usually give them a mild sedative. Most patients are able to return to their normal activities within a few days, and most will tell you LASIK was far easier than they expected!
Other Refractive Surgeries
In addition to LASIK, there are other types of refractive surgeries that may be appropriate for certain patients, such as:
- PRK (photorefractive keratectomy): Similar to LASIK, but without the creation of a corneal flap.
- LASEK (laser epithelial keratomileusis): Similar to PRK, but with a different technique for removing the surface layer of the cornea.
Choosing an Experienced Eye Surgeon
One thing we want to emphasize is that even though LASIK is a “quick and easy” eye surgery, it does require experience and skill, and it can go terribly wrong in cases where the person performing the surgery is not qualified. It is essential to choose an experienced eye surgeon for any type of refractive surgery. Dr. Petelin has been a leader in performing LASIK and other refractive surgeries for nearly two decades.
